Wolves off to Wexford with very strong squad tomorrow
McCarthy has named a 23 man strong squad for the trip tomorrow to Wexford and the match against Kevin Doyle’s team in his formative years – Wexford Youths. Doyle demanded (or maybe he asked politely) when he joined Wolves from Reading that Wolves should visit and play his native team.
Mick McCarthy says to Wolves official site:
“It was part of our deal to bring Kevin in that we would go over and play a friendly thanks to his association with (Wexford chief) Mick Wallace, and it’s something Kevin particularly wanted to do. It’s a first team squad travelling – the lads who didn’t play against Stoke will probably have 60 minutes, or certainly they will play the biggest part of that game. The ones who have played will probably have 30 minutes or so“.
“We have benefited from having some good players from Ireland – some of the lads who have come out of the League of Ireland and lower leagues. So we were more than happy to do it. We might spread our tentacles a little bit further into Ireland and we might impress people. We might get another player from somewhere and a few supporters because of this trip“.
“It’s really to raise funds (for Wexford), but if it raises the awareness of our team, then great. We’ve had some good success with bringing players in from Ireland, and it’s always important to give something back to the clubs that have helped produce these players. It will be a very special night for Kevin and we’re all looking forward to the game.“
The Wexford born striker Kevin Doyle says to his native clubs website:
“I was delighted that Wolves agreed to the fixture when agreeing the transfer as Wexford Youths and Mick (Wallace) deserve any help they can get as Mick was a huge influence on my career and development,” Doyle said. “It’s not always possible to give something back to the people who have helped you succeed, so this game will at least go someway towards that“.
“What Mick has done over the years with Wexford underage teams and what he has done now with the Youths League of Ireland team is phenomenal. He lives and breathes football and the people of Wexford are lucky to have such a dedicated person who has brought League of Ireland football to the county, as to be honest, if it wasn’t for Mick it may never have happened.”
“The League is not in a strong position at the moment, which is sad to see, as my time there played a huge role in my progress. If a game like this can help to build the profile of the Wexford Youths and raise some money for the club then that’s good, but it would be great if people supported their local club week in week out and hopefully a lot of the people at Ferrycarrig Park on Monday will be at the club’s next League of Ireland game.”
“It’s going to be a special night playing for Wolves in Wexford against a lot of lads I would have played with and against at underage level. Ferrycarrig Park is only a few miles away from my family home and I’m sure there will be a huge crowd at the game, so I’m really looking forward to it.”
The squad that’s going to Wexford tomorrow:
Hennessey, Hahnemann, Castillo, Milijas, Maierhofer, Berra, Mancienne, Doyle, Edwards, Keogh, Henry, Jarvis, Halford, Elokobi, Ebanks-Blake, Iwelumo, Kightly, Surman, Craddock, Zubar, Stearman, Hemmings, Malone.
