The Vokes Watch: played 86 minutes for Leeds in 3-1 Cup win

Vokes played from start for Leeds tonight in the area quarter finals of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy against Grimsby Town.

The on loan Wolves striker nearly took Leeds to the lead in the first minute after a corner from Robert Snodgrass from the left. Vokes produced a header from inside the area, but it went over the crossbar.

With close to half an hour played Vokes had another header from inside the penalty area. But that one went over the bar as well.

Leeds had good control over the game and after forty minutes Gradel set up the first goal by cutting inside to shoot. The Town back Lancashire had a touch on the ball, but but the shot went in the net inside the near post.

On overtime in the first Leeds Neil Kilkenny grabbed the second on a pass from Jermaine Beckford. 2-0 at half time.

With some help from Bradley Johnson, who had a good run, Jermaine Beckford found the net with the third Leeds goal after ten minutes played in the second half of the match. Just a couple of minutes later, though, Town retaliated with a goal from Peter Sweeney. He launched a volley to an Ankergren box-out after a corner.

Snodgrass and Gradel each had good chances at making the advantage three goals again later on. In the 73rd minute Vokes had a good shot from about 20 yards out, that was saved by the Grimsby goalie.

In the 87th minute Vokes was substituted by Enoch Showunmi. Bradley Wood nearly put a goal in for Grimsby late in the match but it was saved by Ankergren.

It was a fairly easy win for Leeds and the team is now close to a final at Wembley. Only three matches left. Who will be the next lamb to slaughter?

Leeds United: Ankergren, Hughes, Naylor, Michalik, White, Snodgrass (Robinson 68), Kilkenny, Johnson (Prutton 81), Gradel, Vokes (Showunmi 87), Beckford. Subs: Jones, Bromby.

Goals:
Lancashire (og) 40
Kilkenny 45+1
