Malone lost but had a chance in first match for Shrimpers

Scott Malone played for Southend first thing after signing for the club today on a loan until the 2nd of January. He replaced Johnny Herd, who had  a hamstring injury.

The match tonight was against Tranmere away. They reside at the bottom of League One and had not managed to win in five matches in the league. Southend is in the middle of the tables so far.

But it was not going to be a happy debut for Malone. He played the 90 minutes, but Southend lost with 2-0 to the Rovers. The first goal came at a corner after ten minutes when Ian Goodison headed the ball in from close range.

Scott Malone had a well-struck free kick in the first half – something we know he is good at and has trained a lot on – but it went wide.

After seventy minutes Terry Gornell kicked the second in for Tranmere after the ball ran loose in the box.

Southend manager Tilson said after the match:

Scott’s an 18-year-old lad who met the team for the first time at the pre-match meal. It’s not ideal, but I thought he did well and the effort and commitment was there from the team.

We played some decent stuff and I wasn’t actually disappointed with the performance. We just need to try and get some consistency in our team selection like we had a few years ago but right now it’s all very bitty and, especially in defence, we’re changing things every week. Francis Laurent is another one we’ve got out injured now. He’s hurt his hamstring, but we won’t know how bad it is until another two or three days.”

Tranmere: Daniels, Logan, Broomes, Goodison (McLaren 64), Bakayogo, Welsh, Taylor, Edds, Curran, Gornell, Shuker (Thomas-Moore 75). Substitutes not used: Collister, Cresswell, Barnett, Ricketts, Bain.

Southend: Mildenhall, Francis, Malone, Christophe, Morrison, Barrett, McCormack, Barnard, Moussa, Freedman (Scannell 69), Laurent (Walker 77). Substitutes not used: O’Keefe, Asante, Bentley.
