McCarthy in press conference: We play 4-4-2 against Birmingham

In a conference for the press today McCarthy praised Jarvis play against Chelsea

I thought he was magnificent on Saturday and he did exactly what I wanted him to do and the way he played went exactly the way we’d tried it in training. He started well and got behind their full-back, which he was always going to do because of his pace – they were never going to catch him. On a different day, we might have scored from his deliveries and then it could have looked a lot better. He went back to his natural position and did really well. He was excellent and having played like that against Chelsea, let’s hope he can do the same again.

About team formations against Chelsea and Birmingham

I know what team I’d like to play, I don’t have too many doubts. I was disappointed with the way we played at Chelsea and I had to change it because at 2-0 down, it was damage limitation. I changed to 4-5-1 to try to shore things up a bit, but we’ll be 4-4-2 on Sunday.

I am very pleased about his praise for Matt Jarvis. I think, as I have said many times before, that he is our best player this season by a mile.

I am not sure, though, that a 4-4-2-formation is the best way to play against Birmingham – even if we play them at Molineux. But on the other hand we have a workhorse like Doyle who can go down and help the midfield if necessary.

In an earlier article I pointed out the probable line’up against Birmingham, and now that we know it will be a 4-4-2-formation this is the most probable starting line-up

———– Hennessey ———-
Zubar – Craddock – Berra – Stearman
Edwards – Castillo – Henry – Jarvis
—–.– Doyle – Ebanks-Blake —–
