Loan Watch: Sam Vokes’s Leeds won over Oldham

Leeds met Oldham at Boundary Park tonight in League One and Vokes played from start on top together with Max Gradel.

It was a rather cautious start from both teams but after half an hour Sam Vokes cheated an offside trap and found himself alone with the Oldham keeper. But the goalie blocked his shot.

But five minutes later Neil Kilkenny could fire a goal for Leeds from a pass by Max Gradel. Leeds then took over the initiative in the match but at half time it was only 1-0 to Leeds.

After two minutes of the second half the Wolves player out on loan Sam Vokes had his second clear cut chance in the match when he plucked down a long ball. But keeper Flahavan ran out from goal and made another good save.

The next chance for Vokes came after a corner when the ball ended up with him, but he missed his third clearcut chance.

In the 77th minute Vokes was substituted for Luciano Becchio and it took only six minutes for him to score Leeds second and kill the game off.

Colchester lost with 1-0 against the London team Brentford. The Wolves player on loan to the U’s Danny Batth was on the bench.

Notts County won with 4-0 against Darlington with Jones on the bench.

Southend lost by 3-0 to Norwich at home. Scott Malone played the match. He had a couple of shots on goal and took a couple of corners and a free-kick.

  1. I am a Leeds fan and while nobody can doubt Vokes effort his shooting is abysmal at the moment, he just doesnt look like scoring. I feel a bit sorry for him as he is trying so hard but I think he will be on the bench for the next match against better opposition.

    • It’s funny. For us he scored for fun when he came in from the bench last season several times. I think he will be just fine and hope that It’s just a fase he goes through. Some kind of stage-fright.

  2. As a Welshman and a Leeds fan I was hoping Sam would be a success at Elland Road, unfortunatley front men tend to be judged by their goals and with Sam you’re never confident he’s going to find the back of the net. At this level he should be banging them in but it’s just not happening for the lad. With Luciano Becchio (a much better target man in my humble opinion) fit again it wouldn’t surprise me if this were Sam’s last start in a Leeds shirt. Shame.

  3. Volkes is definately talented & has a football brain, but he’s on loan as he obviously is not match sharpe- In contrast Becchio who was out injuryed for over month & has come off the bench, but took his chance & set up Beckford at the weekend to save FA Cup embaressment. Volkes will have to step up or will drop to the bench, even in league 1 leeds have talent, Beckford /Becchio had 50+ gaols last season and are automatic start, Grella is lively, Kandol is also on fire but banned. Volkes will get games/ experience in a confident team buzzing with the best record in the leagues. With approx 2 games a week til Christmas the laon should work out for all.
