Micks view: I know what we have to do

Mick McCarthy told the media in a recent press conference what Wolves will do to gain points from the Bolton game.

I know what we have to do. You’d be amazed by how a victory against Bolton would lift this place – the fans, the club, everybody. So really my message is: Let’s be positive about the game on Saturday. We can’t do anything about Birmingham, or anything else. So let’s go on to Bolton and talk about the players we have – the good players we’ve got and the performances we’ve had.

Looking back to the Birmingham, Chelsea and Arsenal matches

Despite a really lacklustre performance in the first half against Birmingham, we ended up with three headed chances. We were one nil up at Everton, they got one chance and scored. That’s what we have to do. We have to convert our chances. I thought up until the Arsenal and Chelsea games we always looked a threat, and I thought we’d score goals. I take those two games out of it, and Birmingham when we were poor.

About the fluctuation in levels of confidence and raising them

It’s about us doing with what we’ve got and turning it around. There’s no doubt they’re good players and I’m not suggesting for one minute that they’re lacking confidence, but it’s amazing how it floods back, or it grows. It might be lying dormant somewhere but it’s certainly there when you get a result from somewhere.

If we beat Bolton there will be a different feel about the place Monday morning, and that’s what we have to look forward to. It was our low point of the season because of our performance and the result. The result of course is paramount, but the performance was poor as well. We’ve all got a role to play in that – me, the players, but there are no fingers being pointed at anybody from us. It’s a matter of redressing the balance this weekend.

I really hope this will be the last we will hear about the Birmingham game. But it is of course not Mick McCarthys fault that this terrible game is always on the agenda. It is the press (my favourite bashing subject lately) who can’t get enough talking about it. Do they really think the supporters of Wolves wants to read about the Birmingham game? Move on! Paddy will!
