Who is Adlène Guedioura?

The Wolves new signing Adlène Guedioura came on after a little over half an hour yesterday against Birmingham City and was – together with Kevin Doyle – one of a very few shining lights in a very dark encounter, when Wolves are concerned.

To me it was a little of a surprise that the 24-year-old French national of Algerian-Spanish origin played as an attacking midfielder.

His best position – according to the information I’ve got – is as a holding midfielder. Actually he said so himself in an interview when he signed for Charleroi.

But he is supposed to be skilled at taking shots and that was also what we saw yesterday. Two more than decent efforts on goal, including a long-distance shot which was a screamer and would have resulted if just a few inches lower.

Adlène Guedioura is a very hard working no nonsense midfielder who was the engine of the Charleroi team. He played only two half seasons for Charleroi but clearly he did make a mark while there. He was also their captain on several occasions. The supporters were very sad when it was rumoured that he was going to Verona.

But that didn’t happen. Apparently one of the reasons for Charleroi to let him go out on loan was that they needed the money. Another was that it came to a clash with their manager on some issues. Their relationship was – with a google-translation ‘execrable’. A third was that Charleroi already had a holding midfielder who could take his place.

This video compilation shows him in action:

Our manager Mick McCarthy had some praise to say about Adlène after the match yesterday to the Official Wolves site:

He’ll be a good player for us. We’ve just had to get him up to speed because he was injured last weekend and only came back towards the end of the week. He’ll be getting games for us because I’m really pleased with him.

I think he is just the kind of midfielder we need. A tough tackling player that has a good shot and is good at those very needed deep passes to our front men. I hope he will adjust to the Premier League quickly, and as it looked yesterday he probably will. And the loan deal includes an option to sign him on permanently…

  1. I agree. He looked good, but he stopped chasing his man before the second B goal. Did MM notice it?..

  2. I agree there. He looks like he could be a real asset.

  3. He is a great solid all around player we need him!!!
    best signing of the season!!!!

    • Best signing in January anyway. Doyle was a quite good signing as well. 😆

I have a feeling we will see Adlène in the World Cup come summer. The manager of Algeria is in Europe now looking at Algerian players. They can not have four midfielders that is better than Guédioura.
