Loan Watch: Hill and Ikeme in relegation battle for QPR

Queens Park Rangers – with Wolves out on-loan players Matt Hill and Carl Ikeme – suffered another blow yesterday against Ipswich away.

Rangers were woeful, writes a fanblog author of QPR. They lacked passion, desire and the will to win. After seven minutes Ipswich took the lead when a long shot from Norris was deflected onto defender Gorks’s leg and went over Carl Ikeme and into the left hand corner. Sour grapes.

Soon after Ipswich had a chance to double their lead when Norris headed unmarked from the far post after a cross. It was fantastically saved by Ikeme, but he couldn’t hold on to it and the newly signed by Ipswich Irish international Darryl Murphy followed up but Ikeme again made a marvelous effort and tipped the ball around the post. Sweet grapes!

But Ipswich continued to attack a weak playing Rangers team and Just before half time they grabbed a deserved second goal. It was Darryl Murphy again and he made no mistake this time, firing past Ikeme who could do nothing to save it.

When the QPR team went out for tea and a rollocking the QPR fans booed their players. Manager Mick Harford to the BBC:

For a professional club, that first-half performance was not acceptable. It was totally inept, lacking everything. It lacked effort and commitment – the second half was better but that doesn’t bother me right now. The players now know they are in a relegation fight – at half-time I told them the fans were right to boo.

In the second half Taarabt came on and gave Rangers more of a positive attacking flair. Five minutes after the hour the pressure finally paid off. It was Simpson who fired home from eight yards and gave Rangers some hope.

They continued to battle, but there were not to be any more goals in this game and Roy Keane’s Ipswich could win with two goals to one. And Ikeme saved them from an even larger defeat. QPR are now just two points from the relegation zone and one point better than Ipswich. But their second half was good and maybe they can build on that?!
