Loan Watch: Chris Iwelumo scored with stunning volley

Bristol City played against Crystal Palace away at Selhurst Park and did what Wolves were not able to do a couple of weeks ago. Win.

And it was the  loanee from Wolves – Big Chris Iwelumo – that scored the only goal in the match. And it was a beautiful volley on the turn after a throw-in. It happened in the 73rd minute in a pretty uneventful game. No-one of the sides or among the players really impressed aside from Big Chris. The Bristol Official Site writes:

The opening goal came out of nothing from a flash of Iwelumo brilliance. Liam Fontaine’s throw-in wasn’t dealt with by three Palace defenders and as the trio waited for the ball to drop Iwelumo pounced with a volley over Speroni with his back to goal for 1-0.”

The Bristol manager Gary Johnson said to the Official Bristol Site:

I told Chris ‘we’re going to take you off in a minute, so give us one last bit of magic’. He volleys a superb goal and turns to me to say: ‘will that do?’. It was a great strike. He had a couple of volleys before that and we saw a few other chances blocked. The way we saw the game out was also professional, keeping hold of the ball in their half. I think Mick McCarthy (Wolves manager) was here to watch tonight. We hope to keep hold of Chris for another month but we’ll have to wait and see.”

What a treat that the big man who scored for fun last season seem to be back and on fire. For you that say that scoring in the Championship count for nothing, I beg to differ in opinion. Iwelumo has been out for months this season because of injury and we haven’t really seen the real Big Chris yet in the Premier. But now that he has gained match fitness I’m sure he can score in any league.

Bristol City played 4-5-1 tonight with Iwelumo as lone striker. Perhaps Wolves could play him alone at top with Jarvis and Doyle as wingers?! Just a thought. But bring him back now, Mick!

  1. Shame we didn’t send SEB out on loan for a few months too! He would have benefitted from regaining his fitness & confidence.

    • I agree completely! MM should have done that instead of rushing him into the team giving him bad confidence playing him to yearly. Mick has said a couple of times that PL is not a league for players not fully fit.
