Lots of chances for Wolves Women

Wolves Women had lots of chances against Leafield Athletic Ladies away today, but the hosts did get revenge for their defeat against Wolves in the cup last week.

Put aside a big chance from Leafield to take the lead after just a couple of minutes when a save from Wolves goalkeeper Becky Thomas with her fingertips prevented an early goal – it was Wolves that had the chances with Packer, Richards and Perks all coming close, but without  any luck.

In the second half Wolves dominated even more with Packer again, Morris and Dani Selmes trying to put one into the net. And then – with less than ten minutes left – Leafield got a doubtful penalty which Hughes made no mistake on and they did hold out to win the game.

Manager Astle said to the Official Wolves Site:

It started very much like last week, and in fairness the game overall was not of high quality or tempo, or even skill. The second half was definitely ours, and we thought it was just a question of when that goal was going to go in. The girls are really disappointed with themselves. I didn’t need to say anything to them at the end, as they know they never performed today to their normal ability. We may have lost to a poor refereeing decision, but at the end of the day we should have put three or four chances away.”

Match away against league leaders Coventry City Ladies next Sunday

Wolves Women: Thomas, Widdal (Longhurst 67), Coley (Durnall 67), Perks Salter, Morris (Bavington 70), Large, Quick, Selmes, Richards, Packer
