Chris is back and The Hoff is off

Gary Johnson – the manager of Bristol City – is was sad to see Chris Iwelumo go back to Wolverhampton Wanderers today. He spoke to Bristol City World and said:

We thank Chris for his time with us. There were a few factors. I had a chat with Mick and I think a lot of it was down to the player. Chris worked so hard getting to the Premier League and I think he wants to be there for the final weeks of the season. He wants to be with his family and try and see if he can win a place in the first team at the top level.”

But at that moment Johnson would neither “confirm or deny” reports about Stefan Maierhofer going the other way. Express & Star, though, seem to be certain that this is going to happen when they write:

Forgotten Wolves striker Stefan Maierhofer was today set to join Bristol City on a month’s loan – as Chris Iwelumo returned to Molineux. Maierhofer was due to see his desire for first team football granted with a stint with the Robins and a double-quick Championship debut at Plymouth tomorrow.

McCarthy at The Wolves Official Site also confirms that Big Chris is back in town:
Chris has enjoyed his time at Bristol City playing games and scoring a couple of goals. It’s given him the chance to build his match sharpness up. He had the opportunity to stay there for longer and also go elsewhere but decided he wanted to come back and try and force his way into the team. Like all of the squad, he just wants to be involved and that’s a really positive attitude to have.

It seem like a good switch. Maierhofer gets some match fitness and iwelumo is back in the squad in a time when we will have three games in seven days. So I would not be surprised if he gets some playing time. Maybe against West Ham.
