Reserves Report: Edwards played for 70 minutes when Wolves lost to Arsenal

The Wolverhampton Wanderers Reserves has today played the Arsenal Reserves at Underhill, London.

A young Wolves team – for the night strengthened by Dave Edwards in his first match for three months after injury – lost with a single goal to an Arsenal team that have the ambition of winning the Premier League Reserves League South.

The goal came after 22 minutes in a goal scramble after a free-kick. Sanchez Watt was behind the free and Coquelin finally found the ball and kicked it in the net from close up.

After that there were no real chances to score by either of the teams in the first half. But Arsenal had a grip of the game.

In the second half Wolves played better and had more chances. Winnall almost went through in the middle in the 55th minute, but Miquel pressured him to shoot slightly wide of the goal. Just after the hour the Winnall substitute Harris curled a shot that also went close to goal. A couple of minutes later Harris had another chance – but headed the ball over after a cross from Mendez Laing.

Wolves now looked like the better team and dominated the match. It felt like an equaliser was not so far away. But on the break Cedric Evina – the left back of Arsenal – was a constant danger with his pace.

After 70 minutes Dave Edwards was substituted. The match ended with ten minutes of chances in both directions. For Wolves Reckord went forward and made a pass to Harris who couldn’t make control and was wide with his shot.

The last thing of importance that happened in the game was that Landell tested Arsenal goalie Shea with a hard, low shot but the keeper did no mistake and the match ended with a disappointing win for the home team.

But the most important thing in a Wolves survival perspective was of course that Dave Edwards is 70 minutes closer to a start in the Premier League.

But in the long run it is of course of utter most importance that Wolves continues to develop the young gold for tomorrow. And we seem to have a whole bunch of interesting players who can hold their own in competition with a very good Arsenal side consisting of several players on the verge of a break through to their first team. The future is bright. The future is Black and Old Gold!
