Probable Team Lineups: Wolves vs Stoke City

The game away against Stoke was a show of strength for both teams. Stoke scored twice in the first half and Wolves scored twice in the second. A 2-2 draw was a fair result for the match.

My head-to head stats articles (HERE and HERE) shows that the players are about equally good as well. Etherington of Stoke City is a very fast and skillful winger, who scored his first goal for them against Wolves. But so is Jarvis. Perhaps it is his time to be the lucky winger on Sunday?!

Craddock scored twice after set pieces when we met them at Stoke on the last day of October. He will be looking forward to play them again – probably as captain this time – as Henry is out because of the red card he picked up against Arsenal. I can’t think of a better captain against Stoke. He knows how to score against them and has the fighting spirit of a  wolf chasing it’s pray.

I see three main reasons for Wolves to come out of this game as winners. Firstly the fact that we are playing at home. After several good games by the team away it is time for the lads to show a home audience what they can do.

Secondly because the team is much better now than in October. The team has settled and they are much more stable in defence – allowing them to push forward and score more frequently than before.

Thirdly because we have something to fight for and Stoke has not. We are still fighting relegation, but with the three points we could earn from this fight – cause it will be a fight with teeth and nails – we could practically be clear for another season in Premier League.

To the teams. The absence of Henry means changes in the Wolves team. I’ve launched a poll to find out who the fans would prefer to replace Henry with (HERE) and I presented the result of the poll and speculated about who McCarthy will play (HERE).

I believe that our manager will play Dave Edwards on the wing -contrary to what the fans prefers – and let Foley take Henry’s position on the inner midfield.  No other changes will be made. Iwelumo will be ready on the bench to come in if necessary and so will Guédioura and Ward.

Stoke has a problem with Fuller. He has nine yellow cards and if he gets another one he will be out for two games. After this weekend it is amnesty for all yellow cards so I don’t believe that Pulis will risk playing Fuller – at least not from start.

Beattie is on his way back from injury, but I don’t think Pulis will play him from start either. There seem to be some animosity between Pulis and Beattie as well that can tap into Pulis decision-making. Because of all this I believe that Tuncay and Kitson will start up front for Stoke on Sunday.

The back four in Stoke comes from two back-to-back clean sheets, but I still believe that Pulis will change it. Shawcross is a very good defender and he is back from a ban after a red card when braking the leg of Ramsey. Shawcross has chances to play in the World Cup come summer and I don’t think Pulis want to spoil them and he is the most talented defender of Stoke.

So let us then look at the probable starting elevens on Sunday noon at Molineux. An interesting fact is that – if I am right – both Wolves and Stoke only have six of the starters from the match in October on from start on Sunday.

The result? Impossible to predict. But if Wolves play and fight like in previous matches we have a good chance to get all three points. Stoke will look for a draw. The always are when away from home.

  1. That looks about right Paddy, just hope Edwards gets up to speed quickly !

  2. Yeah. But I looked at him in a rerun when he came in against Arsenal and he really looked better than I thought when I saw him live. Did some good passes as well so I guess I just was a little bit pissed about MM letting him in instead of Guédi and to soon. He will do alright in my opinion.

  3. God!
I wish I lived in England so I could go and watch the games live.
I live in a town in California and no one here knows about Wolverhampton, and they even think I’m talking about Wolfsburg sometimes.
Anyway, definitely a win for Wolves.
Stoke played West Ham and Hull? I think.
We’ve been better than both those teams and we have the potential to be an even better team.

  4. Our home draw against you felt like a defeat both to the players and the fans. Don’t be fooled into thinking we have nothing to play for – we want revenge and we want to beat last seasons points total (45). Your team prediction is pretty close but I think shawx will stay on the bench for this one as we have had 3 clean sheets out of the last 4. Moult may make his debut up front too. I think you will easily stay up but predict 3 points to the Potters today 🙂
