Nenad Milijas – A Wolf From Serbia In The World Cup

As you all probably know the World Cup starts tomorrow and Wolves have three lucky  stars who will play for their national teams in South Africa. Or will they?

The lucky three are Nenad Milijas from Serbia, Marcus Hahnemann from United States and Adlène Guédioura from Algeria. Let us first take a look at Nenad Milijas.

Nenad Milijas first season for Wolves has not been totally convincing. He lacked tempo and defensive craftmanship and showed many of the signs of a player not used to play in a British team and in the best league in the world when he came.

But after some training and a couple of games he had some good spells and showed us all what he can do at set pieces – something his fellow countrymen from Serbia and former supporters from Red Star Belgrade knew very well already.

Nenad Milijas is not a certain starter for Serbia in the World Cup. He has competition in young, talented midfielder Kuzmanovic. I’ve read some fan sites and many supporters believe that manager Antic should give him a start instead of Milijas.

Neither of them has been very succesful in the last two training games before the start of the World Cup, however, so I believe Milijas will start. He is an ‘old’ favorite of Antic and he has played a lot of competitive games with the others in the team with good results. But he will have to hold a high standard to stay their first choice.

Nenad himself about the World Cup adventure (from the Official Wolves site):

We did well in the qualifiers picking up some great results against big teams and winning the group was important. We showed to ourselves and to other people that we can be a good team. We deserved it and people now talk about us like we can do something at the World Cup. And we think like that as well. We have to feel we can get through the group stage and after that it’s just a case of trying to win games and see where we can go.

Serbia play in an open group with Germany, Australia and Ghana, which they take on first on Sunday at 4pm. They will need at least a draw in that game to have a chance to finish up as first or second in the group. Germany is of course tipped by everybody to win the group easily. An interesting ‘detail’ is that there is a good chance that Serbia will meet England in the next round if they will pull through.

But if Serbia play as they did in the qualification to the World Cup they will have a chance to win the group. And I think they will up their play considerably when it really matters. Think of Croatia when they were a freshly formed nation playing in the World Cup for the first time. Pride and giving it their all. That will be what we will see from the Serbian team and from Nenad.

My prediction is anyway that they will end up coming second and qualify for the next stage. And that we will see a Wolves player starting in a Serbian shirt  in the World Cup on Sunday. What a treat! 😆

  1. I’ll keeping tabs on Serbia and Milijas. If he manages to grab a place in their first team line up and they are doing well through out the tournament, it will probably give him some extra chances at Wolves when the campaign starts. Good luck to Milijas and Serbia

  2. Its worth noticing too, that New Zealand has a former Wolf, in manager Herbert.
