Another youngster about to sign for Wolves

Irish papers writes today that Wolves are about to sign the Bohemians young defender Matt Doherty.

The youngster haven’t even played a competitive game for the senior team of the Gypsies yet, but McCarthy got his eyes on him when Wolves played a young Bohemians team in pre-season. According to The Irish Herald, Wolves then sent a scout out to watch Doherty when Bohs played the Villa and he liked him.

In the game against Wolves Doherty was the bright shining light and almost scored  a goal from 30 yards out that Hennessey had to dive down to the low corner of the goal to save.

Reports from the same source say that Doherty only costs Wolves €50.000 (about £40.000 I believe). The Bohemians are in financial troubles so they are only pleased to be able to sell the youngster.Doherty – a 19-year-old preferably right back originating in Belvedere and Home Farm – reportedly was in Wolverhampton yesterday for talks and signing was hoped to take place today – all according to Bohemians manager Pat Fenlon, who the Irish papers have talked to.

Fenlon to the Herald:

We have spoken to his schoolboy clubs here in Dublin and they are happy with what we are doing. This is a great opportunity for Matt, sometimes it’s not just about making money — and I know we need money — but we’re not standing in his way. Matt’s a very good young player who has a real chance. I know Mick McCarthy is very taken with him, and we wish him the best of luck.”

I have no idea if this is a good or bad signing, but I’m all for Wolves trying to catch young, affordable talent all around and school them to good professionals. It has worked well before and can do again.

It sounds as it is almost a done deal as well, as the Bohemians manager is the one that has mentioned the deal is about to take place.
