Probable Team Lineups: Wolves vs Newcastle United
Another weekend and another game. I love it! Especially as Wolves made a terrific start to the season.
But there is of course a snake in paradise. And the snakes name is Injury. Already last season the snake took a bite on Stephen Hunt and Michael Kightly, but this season it has been very active aswell with the new signings Steven Fletcher, Jelle Van Damme and Steven Mouyokolo.
I hope that the crew at Wolves has recognised that it is the new players that get bitten by this snake. Perhaps they are driven to hard when not used to the Wolves way? Maybe their ground training was not up to scratch?
Anyway. At least two of the three players above – Fletcher and Van Damme – could be ready to play against Newcastle, but they are still in doubt.
Happy news are, though, that Dave Edwards and Ron Zubar are back in contention after playing against Southend in the week. And we’ve got a ‘new’ signing in Mancienne that gives more options in play.
The injury situation among our guests is slightly better, but they will miss Danny Guthrie, Tamas Kádar, Dan Gosling, Leon Best, Danny Simpson and Steven Taylor But it’s just a couple of them that would go right into their first team.
Newcastle has played a 4-4-1-1 formation with Nolan and Carroll upfront in the two matches they have played so far. They have no reasons to change that against Wolves. I believe that they will start with exactly the same team that massacred Aston Villa latest.
It is much harder to predict how Wolves will play. Lots of options both in players and formations.
The central defenders and the keeper are really the only players that are certain. On left back i believe that Stephen Ward is the first choice of McCarthy, but he can also play on the wing if Van Damme is still out.
On right back it is a choice between Zubar and Foley. And again it could be a question of match fitness for Zubar.
At the inner midfield McCarthy will make the choice of 4-5-1 or 4-4-2. With Mancienne available and Newcastle playing a variant of 4-5-1 I believe that Mick will start with Mancienne guarding the back four and with Jones and Henry a little further up the pitch.
That leaves only one spot upfront and that will be given to Doyle, of course. With Ebanks-Blake having a good chance to join him during the match.
I’m very conservative in this starting eleven lineup for Wolves and I believe that our manager will be. But McCarthy will probably have Ebanks-Blake, Fletcher, Van Damme, Guédioura and others on the bench to play when needed.
The main problem for McCarthy and Wolves will be to stop Newcastle from playing their game. If we will manage that we can very well score one or two goals with this formation and these players and the ones available on the bench:
