Reserves Watch: Winnall scores hat-trick against unbeaten Chelsea

The Wolves Reserves played against Chelsea tonight at Telford.

Wolves started with almost an all-in-all development team, apart from Mujangi-Bia and a couple of under 18’s players on the bench.

Chelsea – on the other hand – had a starting eleven including three players with first team experience – Jeffrey Bruma, Patrick van Aanholt and Gael Kakuta.

For this game, if any, it is very proper to say that Wolves started the best. Sam Winnall shocked Chelsea with scoring the first goal on a rebound after just 26 seconds.

After eight minutes Chelsea had their first chance as Bruma flicked on from a free-kick just past the post.

But just before the half hour Rooney scored Wolves second and about ten minutes later Winnall scored his second and Wolves third. And he went close to score his third and Wolves fourth in the 40th minute.

And just two minutes before half time Jake Cassidy came close to score aswell, but young keeper Blackman in the Chelsea goal made a good save. And a minute later he had another chance, but it went over the bar.

Chelsea had not lost a single game this season for the Reserves and during tea I’m sure that the management of Wolves tried to instill in the youngsters to fight hard to hold on to their lead in the second half.

Mick McCarthy was also there watching the game and cheering the youngsters on.

Bruma and Kakuta had a couple of chances for Chelsea in the beginning of the second half, but McCarey managed to save the goal from not wanted visitors.

Just after the hour Chelsea substituted Bruma and Kakuta. I guess this was because they must have the strength to sit on the bench for the Chelsea first team in the week. 😆

A couple of minutes later Winnall scored his third and Wolves fourth goal on a penalty. Winnall was pushed in the back while close to scoring in the area and did no mistake from the spot.

Not much happened in ordinarie time, but just before the full 90 Rooney hit the bar with a shot. A couple of minutes into stoppage time – just before the referee ended the game – the Chelsea keeper Blackman had to make a double save to prevent Wolves from scoring yet another one.

So the match ended 4-0 to Wolves and the hat-trick-man Sam Winnall walked out just before the end of the game, receiving applause from the stands. A great revenge for him as he was injured playing against Chelsea for the reserves in January. Now he is back – with a vengeance. 😆

It really looks like our development team finally are getting somewhere. And it looks like they are playing better without too many first team players among them.
